How we design it

What actually decides a laundry room

This is the most mechanical room in the house. The machines lead and the cabinets follow.

The machines come first — including their hoses
Give us the model numbers, or at least the real width, depth, and height of your washer and dryer. Depth is what catches people out: hoses behind the washer and the dryer vent elbow sit further into the room than the machine itself, so the run in front either gains a bump-out or the countertop gets deeper. We'd rather draw that now than discover it on install day.
Stacked or side-by-side changes everything
Stacking frees a full machine's width of wall for a tall cabinet or a hanging column, and takes away the countertop over the machines. Side-by-side gives you that counter and eats the wall. This single decision shapes the room more than any other, so tell us which you have — or which you're willing to buy.
The folding counter is the point of the room
A continuous top across side-by-side machines is the surface you'll use every single load. It only works if the machines end up level with each other, which means matching pedestals — one machine raised and the other not gives you a step, not a counter. We draw the counter as one run and note what it depends on.
Uppers are set by the open door, not by habit
A cabinet above a top-loader has to clear a lid swinging up; above a front-loader it has to clear a door swinging out. We set upper-cabinet height off the machine with its door open rather than off a standard kitchen number, which sometimes means fewer, taller cabinets, or an open shelf where a cabinet would fight the lid.
Hanging and drying, actually drawn in
Things that can't go in the dryer need a home or they end up on the shower rail. That's a rod under a wall cabinet with real clear space beneath it, a section of open shelf for drying flat, or a pull-out rack inside a cabinet. Tell us roughly how much comes out of each load and we'll size it instead of guessing.
Sinks: worth it if you'll use it
A utility sink needs supply, a drain, and base-cabinet width that would otherwise be storage. If the plumbing isn't already in the room, that's the expensive line on the job. We'll draw it happily — we'll also tell you exactly what it costs you in cabinet run so you can decide with your eyes open.

Questions, answered

What if I haven't bought the washer and dryer yet?

Tell us the size class you're shopping and we'll design to those dimensions, then note the maximum machine footprint the layout allows. You get a plan and a number to shop against, which is a much better order of operations than buying first and squeezing later.

Can you design around a stacked washer and dryer?

Yes, and it's often the better use of a small room. Stacked machines free a full machine's width for a tall cabinet or a hanging column — you trade away the countertop over the machines, so we make sure a folding surface exists somewhere else in the layout.

Do you include a utility sink?

If you want one, yes. A sink needs supply and a drain, so it's easiest where plumbing already exists in the room, and it takes base-cabinet width that would otherwise be storage. We draw it in place with the cabinet it sits in and show you what the run looks like with and without it during your revision rounds.

Can my laundry room match my kitchen cabinets?

Yes. Tell your designer which catalog and door style your kitchen uses — or send photos and we'll work to the closest real match — and the laundry room is drawn in the same line. Matching an unknown or discontinued line exactly isn't always possible, and we'll say so before we start rather than after.
