Can AI design my room?

AI can design any room up to the point where the design has to be bought. For a closet, laundry room, bathroom, pantry, or home bar, ChatGPT and the free planning apps will give you a sensible arrangement, real dimensional rules of thumb, and a picture of the result — all genuinely useful. What no consumer AI tool does today is convert that arrangement into cabinet part numbers a shop can order, dimensioned elevations a fabricator can build from, and a plan checked against the plumbing, venting, and framing that already exist in your house.

Can AI help me design a closet?
AI helps with a closet more than with almost any other room, because closet design is mostly arithmetic about your clothes and AI is good at arithmetic you can describe. Tell ChatGPT how many long-hang garments you own, how many shirts, how many pairs of shoes, and the closet's width, depth, and ceiling height, and you will get a plausible allocation of double-hang, long-hang, drawers, and shelving — usually a better starting point than the empty room you are staring at.
The standard numbers AI gets right for a closet are worth having in your head: double-hang sections stack at roughly 40 to 42 inches each, a long-hang section needs about 66 to 72 inches, a hanging section wants about 24 inches of depth with the rod set about 12 inches off the back wall, and shelf-only sections work at 14 to 16 inches deep. Shoe shelves are usually spaced about 7 inches apart, angled or flat.
Where the closet plan breaks is at the fabrication list. A closet is built from finished panels, cleats, rods, drawer boxes, and slides cut to sizes that depend on the manufacturer's system and on whether your walls are square — and closet walls very often are not. AI will tell you to put a 30-inch drawer stack in the middle. It will not tell you which 30-inch drawer stack, in what finish, at what part number, or what happens to the three-eighths of an inch the wall is out of plumb.
Can ChatGPT design my laundry room?
ChatGPT can design a laundry room layout well enough to be useful, and laundry rooms are unusually forgiving of that because the constraints are so mechanical. Give it the room dimensions, whether your machines are front-load or top-load, whether they stack, and where the existing hookups are, and you will get a workable arrangement of counter, cabinets, and sink.
The dimensions ChatGPT usually gets right: a standard washer or dryer is about 27 inches wide and needs roughly 31 to 34 inches of depth once the door, hoses, and dryer duct are accounted for, a stacked front-load pair runs close to 80 inches tall, and a folding counter over front-loaders lands near 36 to 38 inches high. Those are real planning numbers and they will keep you out of trouble early.
What ChatGPT cannot see is the part of a laundry room that actually decides the design: where the dryer vent penetrates the wall, whether the washer box is recessed or surface-mounted, how much the drain standpipe eats into the cabinet behind the machines, and whether the door into the room swings over the space you wanted for a hamper. It also cannot produce the cabinet list — the wall cabinet widths above the machines, the filler at the end of the run, the toe kick footage, the counter dimensions a fabricator templates from.
Can AI design my bathroom?
AI can plan a bathroom on paper, and it will correctly repeat the clearance rules that govern one — but a bathroom is the room where AI's blindness to existing plumbing does the most damage. Everything in a bathroom sits on a drain, and drains are the most expensive thing in the house to move.
The rules AI reliably knows are the code-driven ones: a toilet needs about 15 inches from its centerline to any side wall or fixture and roughly 21 inches of clear space in front, and vanities come in standard widths — 24, 30, 36, 48, 60, 72 inches — so a 41-inch alcove is a 36-inch vanity plus filler, not a 41-inch vanity. Those constraints are public and stable, which is exactly why a general model holds them.
What AI cannot do is look at your bathroom and know that the toilet drain is where it is, the vent stack is inside that particular wall, and the tub's trap sits over a joist that will not accept a new cut. It also cannot produce the vanity, linen tower, and medicine cabinet as catalog line items with finishes and hardware, which is what a shop needs before it can price the room.
Can AI design a pantry or a home bar?
AI does well with pantries and home bars at the concept stage and poorly at the point of purchase, in the same pattern as every other room. A pantry is a storage math problem AI can genuinely help with: shelves around 12 inches deep hold cans and boxes without swallowing them, 16 to 24 inches of depth is what small appliances need, and adjustable spacing beats fixed because a cereal box and a stand mixer disagree about height.
A home bar is mostly a services problem, and that is where AI stops being able to help. A wet bar needs a supply line, a drain, and a GFCI circuit; an undercounter refrigerator or ice maker needs a specified opening and a ventilation path it will not get if it is boxed in tight. AI will draw the bar. It will not tell you whether your basement's drain line is high enough for that sink location, which is the question that decides whether the bar happens at all.
In both rooms the cabinetry itself is ordinary kitchen cabinetry from the same catalogs, which is good news: pantries and bars can be built from real, priceable cabinets. They just need the same thing a kitchen needs — a list of them, by part number.
What do all six rooms have in common that AI keeps missing?
Every room in a cabinetry project fails in the same place: the gap between a design and an order. AI produces a description or an image; a shop buys from a schedule of parts. Nothing in a consumer AI tool bridges that gap, and the gap is identical whether the room is a $60,000 kitchen or a $3,000 closet.
Concretely, the missing pieces are always the same four:
- An itemized cabinet list: every box, panel, filler, and piece of trim as a code from one manufacturer's current price book, with quantity and finish.
- Dimensioned elevations: each wall drawn to scale with heights, widths, and the vertical position of everything mounted on it.
- A door and drawer schedule: which openings are doors, which are drawers, which way the hinges swing, and what hardware goes on them.
- Reality checks: plumbing, venting, electrical, framing, out-of-square walls, and door swings, verified against the room that actually exists.
None of those four are aesthetic judgments, which is why AI's genuine strength — taste, arrangement, explanation — does not reach them. They are documentation, and documentation is produced by someone who is accountable for it being correct.
When is a free AI tool the right answer for my room?
A free AI tool is the right answer whenever nobody is about to be paid. If you are deciding whether you want the project, working out roughly what fits, arguing about finishes, or building the confidence to talk to a contractor without feeling lost, free tools do that job well and there is no reason to spend money.
This is especially true for smaller rooms. A reach-in closet, a modest pantry, or a laundry room where the machines are not moving may never need a paid design at all — if the layout is obvious and a local shop is measuring and building it anyway, a conversation with ChatGPT plus a tape measure may be everything you need. Paying for a design you will not use is a waste, and we would rather say so.
The case for paying is narrow and specific: you want more than one shop to price the identical room. That is the only thing a paid design does that a free tool cannot, and it is worth money exactly in proportion to how much the room costs to build.
